Behind him, my yard was covered in pigs.<\/p>\n

Pink piggy banks. Blue ones. Ceramic ones. Plastic ones. Some lined the porch steps. Others crowded the walkway and spilled across the grass like a strange little parade.<\/p>\n

At the end of the driveway, two patrol cars blocked the street.<\/p>\n

My six-year-old son, Oliver, appeared behind me in his race car pajamas and grabbed my robe.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom,\u201d he whispered. \u201cDid I do something bad?\u201d<\/p>\n

I pulled him close.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, baby.\u201d<\/p>\n

The officer looked down at him, and his expression softened.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re Oliver?\u201d<\/p>\n

My son nodded but stayed pressed against my side.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m Officer Hayes,\u201d he said gently. \u201cNobody\u2019s in trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n

Officer Hayes glanced toward the little yellow house across the street.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause yesterday,\u201d he said, \u201cyou noticed something a lot of grown-ups missed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then he held the piggy bank out to me.<\/p>\n

\u201cMa\u2019am, I need you to break this open.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n

His voice became careful.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause what\u2019s inside is more valuable than money.\u201d<\/p>\n

It had started a few days earlier, when I saw Mrs. Adele standing by her mailbox with an envelope clutched tightly in her hand.<\/p>\n

Oliver waved from beside me.<\/p>\n

\u201cHi, Mrs. Adele!\u201d<\/p>\n

She smiled, but it came late.<\/p>\n

\u201cHello, my favorite dinosaur expert.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cNot yet,\u201d he said seriously. \u201cI still mix up the meat eaters.\u201d<\/p>\n

She laughed softly, and I stepped closer.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything okay?\u201d<\/p>\n

Mrs. Adele tucked the envelope behind the rest of her mail.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust bills, honey. They come whether you invite them or not.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you want me to read anything with you?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, Carmen. Thank you. Elias handles most of that now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYour nephew?\u201d<\/p>\n

She nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince my eyes got worse, he put everything online.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIs he nearby?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTwo hours away.\u201d She gave a small, tired laugh. \u201cHe\u2019s busy. I just hope he remembers the electric bill. It\u2019s due today. These companies don\u2019t wait for old ladies to find their reading glasses.\u201d<\/p>\n

Something about that made me pause.<\/p>\n

\u201cMrs. Adele, if anything feels wrong, knock on my door.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, Carmen,\u201d she said, patting my arm. \u201cYou have Oliver, work, groceries, bills. I won\u2019t be another thing for you to carry.\u201d<\/p>\n

Oliver looked up at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom carries heavy bags all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mrs. Adele smiled at him sadly.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know. That\u2019s why I won\u2019t add another one.\u201d<\/p>\n

I should have pushed harder.<\/p>\n

Three nights later, Oliver stopped in the hallway with his toothbrush in his hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat, baby?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMrs. Adele\u2019s porch light is still off.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked out the window.<\/p>\n

Her little yellow house sat completely dark.<\/p>\n

No porch light.<\/p>\n

No kitchen lamp.<\/p>\n

Nothing.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe might be sleeping early,\u201d I said, though I didn\u2019t believe it.<\/p>\n

Oliver disappeared into his room and came back holding his green piggy bank.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe says porch lights help people find their way home.\u201d<\/p>\n

I glanced at my own stack of bills on the table.<\/p>\n

Oliver saw them.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre we out of money too?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, sweetheart. I\u2019m just making sure every dollar knows where to go.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen can some of it go to Mrs. Adele?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can try to help.\u201d<\/p>\n

He hugged the piggy bank tighter.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to help too.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGrown-up bills are big.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen I\u2019ll start small.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOliver\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d His little face became serious. \u201cI want it to be mine.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause you already take care of us. You buy cereal and shoes and dinosaur toothpaste. Mrs. Adele takes care of me too. She gives me candy and asks about my spelling tests.\u201d<\/p>\n

I had to turn away for a second.<\/p>\n

Then I grabbed my coat.<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay,\u201d I said softly. \u201cYour gift. My help. We\u2019ll do it together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mrs. Adele took a long time to answer her door.<\/p>\n

When she finally opened it, she was wearing her winter coat inside the house.<\/p>\n

The rooms behind her were dark and cold.<\/p>\n
