Epilogue: She Chose Him<\/h2>\n

When I visited him a week later, I almost did not recognize him.<\/p>\n

He was clean-shaven, resting in a real bed with clean sheets pulled to his waist. The hollowness had not completely left his face, but something softer had returned to his eyes. Something almost like peace.<\/p>\n

Hazel was curled on his chest, exactly where she had always belonged.<\/p>\n

Her ragged ear twitched in her sleep. Her paws kneaded the blanket once, then settled. The sound of her purring filled the small room like a quiet engine keeping him alive.<\/p>\n

He looked at me for a long moment.<\/p>\n
