The hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship has thrown a\u00a0previously little-known virus<\/a>\u00a0into international headlines and mobilized health authorities from all corners of the globe, with the\u00a0head of the World Health Organization<\/a>\u00a0arriving in Spain Sunday ahead of the ship\u2019s arrival near the Canary Islands.<\/p>\n

The outbreak was caused by same rare virus\u00a0that killed Gene Hackman\u2019s wife Betsy Arakawa<\/a>\u00a0in New Mexico last year, but the strain aboard the ship \u2013 the Andes virus \u2013 is uniquely able to transmit from human to human.<\/p>\n
