A federal magistrate judge on Monday said he was \u201cvery troubled\u201d by the treatment of the alleged gunman at the White House Correspondents\u2019 Association (WHCA)\u00a0dinner<\/a>\u00a0shooting last month.<\/p>\n

Magistrate Judge Zia Faruqui raised concerns with the suspect,\u00a0Cole Allen<\/a>, being placed on suicide watch, repeatedly strip-searched and kept in constant isolation from other inmates in general population.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am very troubled by what they indicate the conditions that you have been subjected to,\u201d Faruqui told Allen during a hearing, according to\u00a0NBC<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m sorry. It sounds like things have not been the way they\u2019re supposed to.\u201d<\/p>\n

Allen was taken off suicide watch on Friday but is still being held separately from other inmates in a form of protective custody, NBC reported.<\/p>\n

The hearing came a little over a week after the WHCA dinner shooting on April 25 at the Washington Hilton.<\/p>\n

The incident at the high-profile event caused\u00a0President Trump,<\/a><\/span>\u00a0Vice President Vance\u00a0<\/a><\/span>and other Cabinet officials to be\u00a0evacuated<\/a>\u00a0by Secret Service due to the threat of gunfire at an event with more than 2,000 guests.<\/p>\n

Allen was recorded sprinting past Secret Service agents with guns and knives.<\/p>\n

He is charged with one count of attempting to assassinate the president of the United States, transportation of a firearm and ammunition in interstate commerce with intent to commit a felony and discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence.<\/p>\n

U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia\u00a0Jeanine Pirro\u00a0<\/a><\/span>on Monday decried Farqui\u2019s apology for Allen\u2019s treatment behind bars.<\/p>\n

In a\u00a0post<\/a>\u00a0on X, Pirro wrote that the magistrate judge \u201cbelieves a defendant armed to the teeth and attempting to assassinate the president is entitled to preferential treatment in his confinement compared to every other defendant.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, Farqui said he\u2019s concerned that Allen has not been granted due process under the law.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy concern remains if this is what\u2019s happening in this case, what\u2019s happening in every other case,\u201d he told attorneys on Monday, noting that those convicted of killing people are being housed with \u201cless restrictive\u201d conditions.<\/p>\n

Tony Towns, the D.C. Department of Corrections\u2019 acting general counsel, said during Allen\u2019s evaluation he was determined to be a suicide risk, but the evaluation was not included in his record,\u00a0CBS<\/a>\u00a0reported.<\/p>\n

Farqui has requested to see the form and ordered the Department of Corrections to provide an update to the court by Tuesday morning on the status of Allen\u2019s continued detainment ahead of trial.<\/p>\n

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jocelyn Ballantine, who is prosecuting the case, said Monday that Allen told FBI agents that he did not expect to survive the attack, according to CBS.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s clear he did not expect to survive it, which gives rise to potential concern for suicide,\u201d Ballantine said, per the outlet.<\/p>\n

However, Allen\u2019s attorneys said their client didn\u2019t show signs of suicidal behavior.<\/p>\n

The suspected gunman has been held without access to a tablet and a Bible. Allen requested both items in addition to a visit from a chaplain in preparation for his upcoming court battle.<\/p>\n

Farqui said the conditions he\u2019s being kept under \u201ccould drive a person crazy to be in that situation,\u201d according to\u00a0The Associated Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
